I’m a girl going into the engineering field. What is the overall views on tattoos and piercing in the engineering filed? Is it accepted, frowned upon, or just flat out unacceptable?
Frowned upon.
If a tattoo or piercing is visible in the workplace, you can get fired for it. It has happened many times in history. Also, large or dangling jewelry is also frowned upon. In most engineering fields, you are to dress nicely with formal pants and shirt. Skirts are acceptable only in some companies, and they should be at the knees or longer. Above the knees is seen as unprofessional and distracting to other employees and it can also get you fired.
However, earrings are allowed as long as they are on your ear lobe only.
They also expect you to tie your hair back. My gf got in trouble at work for having her hair down working at Volvo as an engineer.
