Installed a new furnace fan and now my smoke detectors chirp when it starts up. What gives?

Over the past year, as my old furnace fan began to wear out, one of the smoke detectors upstairs would chirp whenever the a/c started. Yesterday I replaced the furnace fan and this morning when it the a/c started, all of the Smoke Detectors throughout the house chirped, some of them several times. Strangely, it did not happen every time the a/c started.

check the smoke detector to see what type it is,some are activated by change in air pressure and temp,some are activated by smoke or the quality of air around it

My house is 20 years old and it is a 1 1/2 story with a full basement. The gas furnace/water heaters are in the basement. Access to the basement is through the interior of the house and it’s walk-out. I’m planning on totally replacing the smoke detectors, they are not hard wired. With this considered, how many battery operated Smoke Detectors should I get for my home? 2600 sq feet finished living space with a full unfinished basement. Where should I install the Carbon monoxide detector?

Check with your local fire department and they will be GLAD to come to your house and show you where to put up all your detectors and also what type of fire extinguishers to have and where to hang them. And it’s a good idea in another aspect…the fire department refreshes themselves on your location. They may also provide window stickers for bedrooms and pets.

It has not markings what so ever. Is there anyway tell if it is a Carbon monoxide detector, smoke detector, or both?

get someone to light a cigarette and cause smoke near it to make it go off – i don’t suggest the open butane trick as somewhere else a light switch may flick, or an automatic thing cut in like a fridge and before you know it you are in heaven ahead of time….

if you do it this way make sure it is well ventilated…

Plan 2 is to open it and see what is on the specs, usually you can see from that,,,,

where in the house should I plug in my Carbon monoxide detector?
how far from the furnace should it be?
should it be in between the furnace and bedroom ? how long would carbon monoxide have to leak before it reached my bedroom?

Carbon monoxide is heavier that air so fixing them upstairs or on ceilings are a waste of time.

The stock answer is as per manufacturers instructions. As a guide though you want one per room which has a fossil fuel appliance.

Fix it on the wall approx 3ft from floor level and within 5ft of the appliance.

Depending on the appliance you might not need one. In the UK we have gas fires with Oxgyen Depletion Devices which will turn of the gas fire if there is not enough oxygen. Boilers are also generally ‘room sealed’ so all oxygen and waste gases are pipe straight outside.

I have a Nighthawk Carbon monoxide detector and what is a number to know so that i know it’s dangerous and should get out? I know it goes off when theres carbon monoxide in the air but i wanna know the number just incase. And I just tested it to and it said 214 is that bad?

The nice thing about Nighthawk is that they have a digital readout of the CO level so that you can monitor it even if the CO level isn’t high enough to trigger the alarm. Under normal circumstances, the display should always read 0. Now, there are things that could cause the reading to temporarily rise, like cooking with a gas stove or oven. But, after you are done cooking, the level should drop. If your detector is reading anything but 0 all the time, you need to find the source and have the problem corrected. I would normally red flag anything over 9 or 10 ppm. Although that is no where near lethal levels, it still indicates a problem. Long term exposure to low levels of CO is not good for you.

I am doing my GCSE’s and i have to find out how many people have Smoke Alarms in there homes and how many don’t. Any answers would be very welcome as i need as much info as possible.
So… How many of use have got smoke alarms?

I have two in my house. Near the kitchen and the other near the bedrooms

you cant use normal Smoke Alarms in the kitchen as you get a lot of false alarms. i have heard you can get less sensitive ones suitable for the kitchen but as yet i hav`nt found any for sale. any suggestions? it`ll be very handy as i had a bit of a mishap in the kitchen. anybody fancy a piece of cremated chicken?

Yes. Just get a photoelectric smoke alarm, preferrably one with a hush button so that you can turn it off for 10 minutes without removing the battery and forgetting to put it back. These alarms are not too expensive and are good also for people who smoke in their bedroom to have in there because smouldering furniture doesnt always set off the other kind of smoke alarm (ionization). Good idea for people who’s hallway one goes off from cooking and always take out the batteries, with this kind you don’t need to.

You can do any of those as long as you do not mind the sound of the alarm because it will be going off.

I heard the French have no Smoke Alarms, and that its next to impossible to buy a smoke alarm in France. French have no Health and Safety Executive (or French equivilent) either.

Re smoke alarms.. should I have on each floor and in each bedroom ?

one smoke alarm outside each bedroom, one in the stairway upstairs, one just outside the kitchen and one in the laundry room, I also have CO2 detectors neer a heater vent, I have natural gas heat. Make sure they are batery backup alarms and change the batteries twice a year. Most house fires are caused by electrical faults, so if the electricity is out and there is no battery back up. they are useless.
