If you did was it worth it- does your dog behave better now?

I have ‘invested’ most of my life from the age of six to obedience training dogs. Even so I always find a class to take my dogs through as it is indispensable to take them through classes. I would never recommend anyone waste their time or money ‘investing’ in someone else training their dog as it is primarily the person that needs the training – it is WAY worth every dog owner to go through obedience classes so they can learn best to interact with and train their dog. It is the BEST thing you can do for you and your dog and your relationship. Anything else you want to do you can skimp on and the dog will be okay but not on obedience training. No book or website or dvd or tv show or anything like that can take the place of you finding and participating fully in a good motivational obedience class.

I just got 2 rescue dogs a 7 month old and a 6 month old Great Danes. I need to do some training. Help! What is the best book to buy? Also for names do you like Mindy, Wendy or Tina For the Female?

In my humble opinion, there is no "best" training book. The reason I say this is because all dogs are different and respond differently to training methods. Also, no one book covers all the different tricks and training methods that are available. I recommend picking up several different books and trying different methods/techniques to see which work best for your dog. I would recommend a book called "The Puppy Handbook: The complete guide to Puppy Care and Training". I like this book because it comes complete with a DVD so not only can you read up on the training techniques, you can actually see them being applied. I picked up a copy for about $20 at a Wal-Mart and I’m sure you can find one at a Barnes & Nobles store.

And as far as names go, I like the names Tina & Mindy.

Is she not on tv anymore at all? Is she going to have a new season soon? If so, when?
oh sorry…..I mean’t like new episodes. I know she is still on, but they are all repeats. thanks!!

I hope she fell into a well and Lassie leaves her….

I think that he has some good techniques, I just wish that people would realize that the things he does are NOT things to be trying out at home.

These are things that should be done ONLY by a pro.

But that’s just my opinion. I guess that kind of goes back to that old joke about dog trainers:

The only thing two trainers can agree on is that a third trainer is wrong.

I do not think much of him. I think he has great personality for TV but I do NOT think much of him as a trainer. Many people forget that it is just a show with LOTS of editing and he does NOT perform miracles. Some of his methods are outdated, cruel and dangerous, he has had some problems because of some of his methods and is even being sued.
Also, I do not see the point of showing these types of corrective measures on a TV show if they can not be used in real life by ordinary people. Most people watch the show to learn how to fix their dogs problem’s, not just for entertainment and the chances of him ever coming to help the ordinary person are slim to none.
You may think alpha rolls are great but I hope you realize if you try alpha roll a very aggressive dog you can really get hurt.

This is a comparative list of what "PETA" the animal lovers should/shouldn’t be doing and feel free to share opinions, flame me for touching a sensitive nerve and even going towards this road:

what peta shouldn’t do:

- they shouldn’t be protesting about a cause that pales in comparison to what actual animal rescue groups actually do and they take up rallies to the circus, KFC, and fur coat makers and animal testing labs. This is useless to go against because most of those places don’t violate any major ethics other than peta’s and that is just for existing.

-they shouldn’t endorse the ALF because they destroy progress to humanity and they aren’t a research organization, they are a group of rag tag bombers that love to destroy work on anti viruses and cures for potentially incurable diseases. They need to make a bridge to work in a much economical way of destroying the science community (like supporting ID and retro sciences like ESP)

-they need to stop wasting the money that was entrusted to them on giant buildings with a lab, chemicals and a Giant Indoor Freezer that Kills unwanted dogs that they deem unfit(poor pit bulls) and they need to try and donate to causes that will stop the endangering process of other species such as the giant frog in Africa that’s constantly eaten.

what they should do:

- they need to do what rescue ink does and SAVE dogs and other animals that are in trouble by bad owners that raise sick dogs, put them into dog fights and even give lessons on how to handle a stray animal carefully. They don’t and they are spending useless protests and give "name changes" to places and buildings deemed inappropriate to their eyes. do they even give this stuff a chance?

-they should work with the science community to increase progress to the point where we have more than enough products that come from meat that don’t cause animal deaths. The need for meat and other products are going to be infinite, so why protest chickens, cows and other farm animals being abused at Certain farms( they show the same footage of the same place) that actually violate industry protocol?

-Stop making shock protest that are stupid, idiotic and a waste of Donations from around the country that want to see animal adoption awareness. Steve Irwin showed how to treat certain animals in the wild if you met them, and Caesar Milan will do more than Newkirk would ever do if she had a child; Caesar will Tell you how to raise a dog and get a great dog without hassle. Showing the holocaust to chickens, making a Flash game that is so stupid even i know KFC will never kill a chicken cruelly without justification. There is no way you guys will ever be taken seriously when you make all fish "sea kittens". that was too low.

i want to say more but if you want to add more suggestions feel free and i don’t know too much about animal rescue things so i will ideally put what should happen.

Newkirk, Marybeth sweet land will keep using animal products so just kick her out now.

You said a mouthful sister!
The people from Peta, and especially ALF are knuckleheads of the first order.

Because
The Lord gave Man dominion over the beasts in the fields and birds in the sky and all the fish in all the oceans.
Some say he even gave The Colonel the inspiration for the 11 secret herbs and spices that go into the Colonel’s delicious chicken at KFC that we all love so much! It is some heavenly good chicken.

Any way, I love animals, they’re delicious.

What is the ideal age to begin Potty Training?

Someone told me I should buy the potty early so my son can become familiar with it. He won’t necessarily have to use it but just get used to the potty being there rather than introducing it and expecting him to use it immediately.

How did you do it?

There is no ideal age. You child has to be ready on their own. I bought a potty chair so they could get used to it. You can sit them on just to get a feel for it. A child needs to be able to tell when they need to go. Does your child complain of wet or soiled diapers? It does take time. My youngest didn’t start going on the potty all the time till he was almost three. Don’t push it,let nature take it’s course. What ever you do don’t get frustrated and don’t get mad if your child goes in the diaper. The last thing you want to do is scare your child. And when the time comes and your little one goes on the potty make a big deal out of it. Yes do the potty dance they love it

I hate the thought of paying hundreds to have our puppy trained when we could do it ourselves. Can someone help recommend a very good book to us,we have a border collie currently 8 weeks old.

There are several books I would recommend. One is "Good Owners, Great Dogs," by Brian Kilcommons and Sarah Wilson. "Secrets to Dog Training", by Dog Trainer Expert, Daniel Stevens. It’s a terrific book on how to train dog. http://kingdom-of-dog.blogspot.com/

You can do a lot yourself, but having your puppy in a structured class, along with reading and working with your pup at home, is the best way to do things. Interacting with other pups and people in a setting where you expect your pup to obey in spite of major distractions is something you can’t do at home. Our local park district charges $84 for an 8 week class. I would highly recommend a lot of reading, practice at home and the classes.

I have a 12 week old German Shepherd that i want to train.
I am located smack dab in between Lubbock, Abilene, and Midland/Odessa. I am willing to travel.

I’m not sure exactly where in West Texas you are located. But here are 3 very active AKC Obedience training clubs in West TX. All 3 offer Obedience classes at all levels & Agility too. I show at their Agility trials 2x a year. Lots of nice folks. Check out their websites from the links below. Hope one of them is fairly close for you.
Midland, TX— Permian Basin Obedience Training Club: http://www.pbotc.com/
Lubbock, TX—South Plains Obedience Training Club: http://www.spotc.org/links.html
Amarillo, TX—Amarillo obedience training Club: http://www.aotcdogs.com/
If none of these is close to you Google dog training in your city or look in your yellow pages for places near you that offer training classes.

Edit: So maybe try the South Plains (Lubbock) or Permian Basin (Midland) clubs.

i have two labs pups a little over a month. at petco they told me to put these potty sheets down and that they’d go on them because they’re suppose to attract them. however, it isnt working.
i’m not home too often to stop them so i need something that really works…any advice??

I’m sorry but why do you get dogs if you’re hardly ever home and therefore not able to spend time with them? You should have the time or take the time to train them properly.
You can put them in a crate when you’re not home but they still shouldn’t be locked up all day.
Anyway, you can tell when your dog needs to go. He will sniff around and you can see it by its body language that he has to go. Watch him and when you notice that he needs to go, put him on the potty sheets or even better, take him outside. Reward him when he goes where you want him to go!!

I have a wire haired daschund and we will be taking it to dog training courses. What age is best for us to start taking it to courses?

Well, for me daschunds are the best choice of breed, so well done on that. I also think – judging by everyones answers – that you should start as early as possible. Daschunds really deserve a nice name like Koko. Whatever the name is, make sure it’s not something like Dahpne. I would also recommend a Dog Training service such as "Lead The Dog". Just look at www.LeadtheDog.co.uk for more information. Have a nice day!
