If the dog is being taken outside at regular intervals to defecate you needn’t train it at all. The dog will eventually head for the door on it’s own. In all the years that I have owned dogs that is all I have ever had to do.

And if the dog does have an in house accident, simply scoop it up and deposit the dog outside. Never punish the dog for it’s accidents. That accomplishes very little for either party.

I’m only pregnant right now, but i was just curious as to what age is it typical to start potty training your kids. My mom had my brother almost completely potty trained at 2, but then me and my brother together went through some water abuse and didn’t end up getting fully potty trained till we were 4 and 5? So i was just curious, what typically is a normal age to start potty training your kids?

Personally I had two kids. One potty trained herself literally at around 2 years of age, my second one didn’t want to be potty trained 2 yrs 9 months and I had to revert to different potty training methods until I found the one that worked for her.

My point here is that all kids are different, and there is no set age for potty training.

Ideally, before you start potty training you’ll be better off waiting for your child’s first potty training readiness signs. Unless he/she is ready, it would usually take longer for kids to be potty trained successfully.

Some signs would be:

1. Toddler taking favourite toys on potty to see what happens;

2. Toddler shows interest in you or other family members when going to the bathroom;

3. Wetting nappy less frequently than usual;

4. Getting annoyed/demand to have nappy changed when wetting/pooping;

5. Not wanting to pee/poop in nappy or taking nappy off

It is better to wait for such signs as these show your child is ready to start going through the potty training phase. Research shows it takes much less time to potty train a child who is ready, rather than ‘force potty training’.

Finally, when child is ready, do your best to make potty training sound like fun and exciting, and keep calm at all times. Getting angry after child has an ‘accident’ will get your child to head to a Potty Training regression phase, which would make potty training even longer.

Good luck soon-to-be mama!

From
PrettyinPink

Nope!
If you actually want to have your dog *trained* I would avoid these places for training at all costs.

Their so called "trainers" only go through something like a 1 day course on how to train dogs.
And no experience is necessary for them to hire these trainers.

Prior to knowing this, I had applied for the position. I was rejected because I had too much experience with training (between my 2 dogs and a foster Dog Training program with a rescue).

I suggest you find a local obedience club with trainers that actually have titled dogs.

I’m reading about people who have taken their dogs to obedience classes and they say its worthless and just a waste of money. And i know someone who has a german shepherd and he has taken his dog to lots and lots of obedience classes but he still doesn’t know sit very well. He thinks sit means down. I think it would be a waste of money. So why do you need to take your dog to obedience classes? especially people who recommend them to others who have a rottweilers, ect i think it’s kinda pointless.

You are 100% correct. These OB training classes that are a group of people pretending to train are indeed a waste of money and time.
Training needs to be done one on one which is why smart people take their dogs, if they cant train them themselves, to a private trainer they have checked out who will then train that dog and then show the owner how to HANDLE, not train it when its done.
If you attend a group training class hoping for results, you wont get them, they are NOT a social club either as I do not want any dog of mine being exposed to other dogs out of control when we first start training. Hope I helped.

I have to shih tzus and they are 15 weeks old. They have not yet learnt to wee on newspaper! Please Help?!?

Don’t teach them to pee and poo in the house, if you do they will do this forever.

When the vet says that your dog cannot be taken out until after its injections/shots, this does not mean that it cannot be taken into your own fenced garden/yard. It simply means that your puppy must be keep away from anywhere that could have been contaminated by other dogs.

A puppy must be taken into your garden/yard every hour, after it eats or drinks and when it wakes up after a nap. You should also take it out just before you go to bed, every time you see it eliminate you must praise your puppy. I use a catch phrase when my puppy has a pee, I say “get one” while it is urinating and “big job” when it passes faeces. If you do this your dog will pee on command when it is older. (Unless it’s bladder is empty)

You should set your alarm and try to take your puppy out about twice during the night. If like me you are a heavy sleeper and you don’t trust yourself to wake up, take the lazy way out. My puppy’s sleep in the laundry room until they are toilet trained, during the day I dip newspapers into the urine which it has passed in the garden and put these on top of a thick pad of newspaper at night, they are drawn to this because of the smell and they will pee on this during the night. Nevertheless I go to bed very late and get up very early when I have a puppy.

Eventually your puppy will go to the door when it knows that it wants to eliminate. In spite of the fact that I leave newspapers down at night my puppy’s are clean from an early age. However they are like babies, they have no control until they are older. Regardless of how diligent you are, your puppy could still have an accident in the house during the day, it you see it stooping or peeing, pick it up and let it finish in the garden/yard.

I want to start a Dog Training business with a facility and everything that specializes in aggression rehabilitation. The problem is I don’t have enough experience in aggression. This is why I need a business partner who does. Anyone know where to find one? or is interested? I have a lot of experience with dogs and all animals for that matter and I am very professional. Someone please help. I am in Northern VA if anyone is interested.

First – you need to find someone to take you on as a dog training apprentice.

Then once you have spent 5-7 years learning about aggression and dog behaviour, then you are going to want to take a few business courses, so that you can run a facility like that.

The best trainers in the world are not going to partner with someone who doesn’t know much. They don’t want to be stuck doing all the work.

Make yourself more valuable to them by educatingg yourself to the hilt. Go to seminars, trials, train dogs at the shelter. Make a name for yourself first.

Word travels by mouth in the dog world – so you build your rep first – then people will be searching you out and not the other way around.

Good luck!

I have just adopted a second dog and would like to find a good training class to take both of them to. I live in Horfield, Bristol so anything close to there would be great. Thanks.
I was hoping for some recommendations rather than picking one from the internet or yellow pages.

I have attempted to train my dog 3 times in the last 3 years.
Pet Smart, and two private trainers. Nothing worked!

My dog, Barley is overall a great dog. He is a Wheaton Terrier. There were just a few problems that we have been unsuccessfully working on such as him bolting out the door if it’s open and by the way he is faster than a speeding bullet!

Also, he would love to jump up on everyone that he gets within a foot of.

I finally stumbled across the Secrets To Dog Training! This really was amazing! This was something I did at my own pace. Although Barley’s main issues are no longer issues, I still apply the techniques that I learned from Secrets to Dog Training almost everyday.

My dog is about 10 months old and he still acts like he did when we brought him home. He doesn’t listen to the command ‘sit’ or ‘off’ unless we have a treat. He jumps on my friends and family and neighbors. He sees a dog and refuses to move unless we go towards the animal and then he doesn’t leave, he just lays down and stays. We’re going to take him to obedience class training soon again, but he acts like he’s the alpha dog, any way to assert my dominance for him to understand he doesn’t rule?

You have an excited willful dog. You are doing the right thing by getting training. Your dog does not need to be dominated, he needs to be led and taught in a consistent and committed way. This takes patience and requires that you understand how to communicate with your dog, he does not speak English. I think clicker training would help immensely.
A few pointers…when he jumps on people, they should quickly and quietly cross their arms over their chest and turn away, do not look at him, touch him or talk to him, just keep turning away from him when he jumps and pretend he’s not there. Dogs think that any attention is worth getting, even negative attention so it is up to you to stop engaging him in any way when he is doing something that you do not like, it is very hard to ignore a dog so that is your challenge.
Meeting other dogs, shows me that he is not exhibiting ‘Alpha’ behavior, he is submissive. By not going toward the other dog until you do means that he wants you to lead and then by laying down and staying once he is near the other dog, he is telling the other dog that he means no harm.
I don’t think he understands your commands completely, he’s just trying to get the treat which is why I recommend clicker training to help him understand exactly what you want. He’s young, be patient and work with him every day, I think he sounds pretty wonderful. Have fun.
