Some basic but effective exercises that you can do at home without any equipment would be push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups(on a tree branch), and lifting and moving furniture is good if you don't want to buy any weights.

If you do want to buy some weights I would recommend dumbbells, which are the single hand-held weights and get an exercise ball. You can do some good stability exercises on the ball like presses and flyes. Sit-ups are good on a ball as well. Good thing about an exercise ball and dumbbells is that they easily store out of the way when not in use.
